When the College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday night, the top six consisted of Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State, in that order.

Fortunately for the Selection Committee, there have already been two matchups of top-six teams to help them figure out the rankings — Georgia’s win at Notre Dame and Oklahoma’s win at Ohio State.

When it comes to head-to-head matchups, the results are important. But, as CFP chair Kirby Hocutt says in the ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM below, that’s not the only factor at play in the rankings:

“Head-to-head results are important to the Selection Committee,” he said. “At the same time, a head-to-head result will become one piece of a team’s full body of work or complete resume. Head-to-head matchups/results are important. That’s why we play the game.”

If Alabama and Georgia keep going the way they’re going now, they’ll meet up in the SEC Championship Game, giving the Committee another marquee head-to-head matchup to help decide the final four when the time comes.

For now, though, the Committee is working with what it has, and it does appear that these six teams are the best in the country in some order.
