The all-SEC national championship game is set. Alabama vs. Georgia will square off on Monday night at 8:00 p.m. eastern for the ultimate bragging rights.

  • Money Line: Alabama (-180) / Georgia (+150)
  • Over/Under: 44.5

How to Read the Odds

Are you new to reading and analyzing odds? The spread is pretty self explanatory. Alabama favored by 4 points means that if you bet on Alabama, you will win the bet if they win by at least 5 points. If you bet on Georgia, they can either win the game outright or lose by no more than 3 points and you’ll win the bet.

Money line refers to betting on the outright winner. Since one team is a favorite, the odds are different for each team. Alabama’s money line being -180 means that you’d have to bet $180 in order to win $100. In other words, if you bet $180 on the Alabama money line, and Alabama wins the game, you’ll win $100 (in addition to receiving the initial money back). With Georgia’s money line being +150, it means that if you bet $100 for Georgia to win, and they win, you’ll win $150 (in addition to receiving the initial money back).

The over/under refers to the total number of points scored in the game. If you bet the over and the combined score is at least 45 points, you will win the bet.

The Odds Can Still Change Between Now and Kickoff

Note that betting books move these lines and odds around based on the incoming bets over time. For instance, if the betting public is overwhelmingly betting on Alabama to win the game and to cover the 4-point spread, often times the betting books will respond by increasing the spread. In such a scenario, you might see the spread go up to five points (Alabama favored by 5).

This is normal behavior for sports betting, as by-and-large, the Vegas books aim to get even betting on both sides.

According to Vegasinsider.com which shows an aggregate average of betting odds from a number of sources, the spread has actually moved down in the national championship game since debuting at 4.5 points in favor of Alabama. So, you might deduce from this movement that the public bet on Georgia early, and as a result, the spread narrowed slightly.
