WATCH: Will Muschamp discusses how much freedom OC Bryan McClendon will have

After a lackluster 2017 season with Kurt Roper calling plays, the South Carolina offense is looking to turn the page under new OC Bryan McClendon.

Many are wondering how much freedom McClendon will have with his play-calling, though, and head coach Will Muschamp was asked about that on Monday.

As you can see in the video below, Muschamp says he’s only called one play in his entire career, so McClendon will have full control:

“I spend my time on the defensive side of the ball, and on special teams and recruiting,” he said. “I want to make sure we’re on the same page philosophically, but I’ve never called a play in my life. Well, no, I did call one play last year — a double shot to Bryan Edwards on the first play against Tennessee. That’s the only play I’ve ever called in my life. I let the offensive play caller call the game, because I’m not going to interfere with that as long as we’re on the same page philosophically.

“Bryan and I are on the same page. We want to dictate the tempo of the game, stay balanced offensively if we need to. If we need to throw it 60 times, let’s throw it 60 times. We need to do what we’ve got to do to win football games.”

The Gamecocks kick off the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Coastal Carolina. The game starts at noon Eastern time and can be seen on the SEC Network.
