After a brief stay at No. 2, LSU is back on top of the College Football Playoff’s selection committee rankings, jumping Ohio State.

On Saturday, the Tigers beat Georgia 37-10 in the SEC Championship Game, while Ohio State defeated No. 8 Wisconsin 34-21 in the Big Ten Championship Game. It appears that LSU’s defense helped move the team back to No. 1.

Selection committee chair Rob Mullens was asked about the rankings shakeup when he appeared on ESPN’s Sunday reveal.

“Well, obviously, you got two complete teams,” Mullens said. “They both added a conference championship. When they’re comparing schedule, you got LSU 4-0 against teams in the top 13. Ohio State 5-0 against teams in the top 21. It was really close. We’ve spent the entire ranking season with one going above the other going above the other just by a tick. In the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen an LSU defense healthy and playing better and continued quality play out of Joe Burrow at the quarterback position. This week, we just felt that LSU deserved that No. 1 seed going into the Playoff.”

By taking the No. 1 ranking, LSU got its preferred CFP semifinal location of the two options, in this case the Peach Bowl in Atlanta against No. 4 Oklahoma.
