Urban Meyer recently shared his top 5 running backs heading into the 2020 season and the former coach’s list includes 2 from the SEC.

Meyer ranks Chuba Hubbard (Oklahoma State), Travis Etienne (Clemson), Najee Harris (Alabama), Zamir White (Georgia) and Trey Sermon (Ohio State) as his top five. Meyer’s list splits into two groups: established standouts and players stepping into larger roles.

Like Hubbard and Etienne, Harris was a top RB1 last season. The former 5-star recruit logged 209 carries for 1,224 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Harris ended his junior year with two of his three best outings. Against Auburn, Harris carried the ball 27 times for 146 yards (tying his season-high) and a touchdown. He followed it up in the Citrus Bowl win over Michigan with 24 carries for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. As a pass-catcher, he also logged 27 receptions for 304 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2019.

Like Sermon, White is looking to step into a bigger role after previously battling injuries while in a crowded running back room. White, the No. 1 running back recruit of the 2018 class, had 78 carries for 408 yards last season. In the Sugar Bowl against Baylor, he received the biggest workload of his UGA career: 18 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown. Meyer recently called White a breakout candidate for 2020.

“When he came out of high school, he was one of the best backs I’ve seen the last five, six, seven years. (He is) powerful, fast, has it all.”
