Momentum has been growing in the state of Mississippi to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the official state flag. The state is the last official state flag to display the Confederate design.

The current state flag can be seen below.

On Thursday evening, the momentum grew even stronger, as SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement in support of changing the flag.

“It is past time for change to be made for the flag for the state of Mississippi. Our students deserve an opportunity to learn and compete in environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all,” Sankey said in a public statement.

“In the event there is no change, there will be consideration to precluding Southeastern Conference championship events from being conducted in the State of Mississippi until the state flag is changed.”

Commissioner Sankey has a big voice, and this could certainly impact talks on the state capital immediately.
