Several Vanderbilt football players have already opted out of the 2020 season, Derek Mason confirmed this week; however, Mason didn’t name the players who have made that decision.

After starting practice this week, Vanderbilt confirmed Thursday night that multiple players have tested positive for the coronavirus, and a report from 247Sports says that the Commodores won’t practice Friday.

“As part of our ongoing testing procedures, we have been made aware of positive COVID-19 test results in our football program,” a Vanderbilt statement read. “We are following the university’s protocols and we are working closely with our Public Health Command Center and other health officials who are assessing potential close contacts and advising on additional steps. Because of applicable federal student privacy law, we are unable to publicly disclose personally identifiable information about any student who has tested positive for COVID-19.”

Derek Mason is scheduled to speak to the media Friday; however, with practice canceled, that may be up in the air.

The SEC, along with the ACC and Big 12, continues pushing toward its September 26th start date, with the Big Ten and Pac-12 already having bowed out.

Vanderbilt is scheduled to open the season on September 26 against Texas A&M.
