Deion Sanders, Jackson State snap Grambling State’s 16-game home winning streak

Coach Prime has it rolling at Jackson State.

Thanks to a late forced fumble near the goal line, Jackson State held on for a 33-28 victory at Grambling State on Saturday as Deion Sanders and Jackson State improved to 2-0.

The win also snapped Grambling’s 16-game home winning streak. It also snapped Grambling’s five-game winning streak against Jackson State, according to the Clarion-Ledger. The closest game in that span was in 2014, when GSU won 40-35. The last time Jackson State won was Nov. 3, 2012.

It was the first Grambling home loss since 2015.

The key play came with 1:04 remaining in the game when Jackson State’s Keonte Hampton recovered a fumble. JSU held on after a 27-14 halftime lead when QB Jalon Jones was 8-for-9 passing for 127 yards and two TDs. He also added six carries for 24 rushing yards and a TD.

There were plenty of storylines entering the game on Saturday. It was Sanders’ first road game as a college football coach, and his first Southwestern Athletic Conference game. For Grambling, it was the team’s spring season opener.

The game had all the makings of a heated rivalry, including this fourth-quarter hit that caused a spin-o-rama.
