In Alabama’s first game without DeVonta Smith since before the 2017 season, the Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver won’t be far away. In fact, he’ll be in attendance.

On Thursday, it was announced that Smith will be serving as the Crimson Tide’s honorary captain for Saturday’s season opener against Miami at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Hurricanes will also be represented by one of their former receivers, as Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin will be their honorary captain.

Smith and Irvin will join the two teams at midfield for the coin toss before the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game.

The game is taking place at a familiar site for Smith. He caught the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He went on to become a rare Heisman-winning wide receiver as a senior in 2020.

Now, Smith is entering his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles, who took him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. He’ll play his first professional game on Sept. 12, only 8 days after he’ll watch his alma mater.

Irvin’s college career was much longer ago, as he spent his time at Miami from 1985-87, then went on to play 12 NFL seasons, all with the Dallas Cowboys. He’s stayed close to the game since his retirement, though, having worked as an analyst with ESPN and NFL Network.

No. 1 Alabama and No. 14 Miami will kick off on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
