Brian Kelly lets key LSU staffer go, per reports

Brian Kelly is virtually restarting LSU’s program from scratch. That’s usually what happens when a coach gets hired from another program, as they hire their own assistants and staffers when starting fresh at a new school.

Reports surfaced Friday night that Kelly let go of longtime strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt, who is a borderline institution at LSU. Moffitt started at LSU in 2000, and he’s been with the program through 3 national titles. Moffitt was originally hired by Nick Saban, and he served through Ed Orgeron’s tenure.

Strength and conditioning coaches aren’t just strength and conditioning coaches, and they aren’t made equal. They are the one coach that gets to spend the most with the team throughout the offseason, and head coaches have to be extremely comfortable with them.

Obviously, Kelly wants his own hire in the position, and it’s truly an end of an era at LSU for Moffitt.

Notre Dame insider Pete Sampson floated Jake Flint’s name for the vacant position.
