Luke Fickell joined the growing chorus of fans, media and college coaches on Saturday with a renewed call for a widely popular rule change in college football.

Fickell, Cincinnati’s coach, was in Indianapolis on Saturday to be honored by the Football Writers Association of America as the Eddie Robinson Coach of Year. He called to end ejections for non-malicious targeting calls.

Asked if he can change one rule, what would it be, Fickell said, “We’ve got to stop ejecting players from college football.”

Fickell received the award after the FWAA said Fickell took the Bearcats to unmatched feats this season, qualifying for the College Football Playoff as the nation’s only undefeated team (13-0) and the first Group of 5 program to do so while winning a second straight American Athletic Conference championship.

Fickell received the iconic bust of the late Eddie Robinson, a College Football Hall of Fame coach at Grambling State University for 55 years and winner of 408 career games.
