Allen Greene has a future as Auburn’s athletics director that is still very much in doubt.

The Tigers are in the midst of a change in presidents, and Green’s contract runs into early 2023 as incoming president Chris Roberts has a decision to make in terms of renewing Greene’s contract. For his part, Greene recently told AL.com about his desire to stay at Auburn.

“I love it here. My wife loves it here. My kids love it here,” Greene said. “When I got here four years ago, I remember telling a group of alumni that I’ve been an Auburn man my whole life. I just didn’t know until I got here.”

Greene, who has been at Auburn since January 2018, is often discussed amid the ongoing power struggle that is the Auburn athletics department and boosters. He was criticized by some in recent months for his relative lack of response during the discussions about Bryan Harsin’s future with the Tigers, and the fact that the football team struggled mightily down the stretch last season.

Besides football, Greene’s department had an overall successful year, with men’s basketball reaching its first number one ranking in program history. The gymnastics team is led by Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee, who has brought national attention to The Plains.

“The values at Auburn align with mine,” Greene said. I appreciate that Auburn wants to win. But they want to excel in the classroom. They want to create Auburn men and women. That’s who I am. That’s why I’m excited to be here.”
