Dax Courtney, a tight end at Arkansas, shared an emotional announcement that he would medically retirement from football following countless injuries that have caused him to think about life after football.

When Courtney committed as part of the 2022 recruiting class, the 247Sports rankings ranked him as the No. 28 tight end in the class of 2022 and the No. 6 overall recruit from the state of Arkansas. But he suffered a torn ACL in the first game of his high school season last year.

A 6-foot-6 and 220-pounder, Courtney in high school played tight end and strong safety for head coach Mark Courtney, his father, at Clarendon High School in Arkansas, where he was teammates with fellow Class of 2022 signee Quincey McAdoo.

“It’s with tears in my eyes that I announce I have been medically retired,” Courtney wrote on social media. “The sport I’ve put my heart into for 19 years is now over for me as a player.”

Courtney thanked his family, coaches, trainers, Razorback coaching staff and explained he’ll lean on his faith.

“Thank you to my teammates from pee wee to now, love y’all boys,” he wrote. “I love football with all my heart, but it’s time for a different route. I love you all.”
