Tipgate: Controversial call against LSU drew fans’ ire late in OT
By Keith Farner
Published:
Alabama had a controversial call late in the loss to LSU that led to the Crimson Tide’s go-ahead touchdown in overtime.
A pass that was found that it wasn’t tipped, after instant replay review, held up a pass interference call against LSU, and 3 plays later, Alabama’s Roydell Williams ran in a 1-yard touchdown.
That led to several fans to bring up that the officials were somehow in favor of Alabama winning and this kind of call would setup the Crimson Tide for the SEC Championship Game or the College Football Playoff.
Here’s a sample of some fan reaction:
More #BS – a tipped pass by DT of @LSUfootball in OT but @ESPN team of @cbfowler @KirkHerbstreit can’t see the tip- what an absolute travesty-So sick of @AlabamaFTBL getting breaks like this because we all know they’re #OUT of @CFB #Playoff w/ loss pic.twitter.com/tVEALrahvt

Gotta keep Alabama in the mix for the CFP. Only reason that wasn’t overturned

Wow, they really want Alabama in the top 4. Two calls that should have been overturned, denied.. can’t wait to listen to the media on Monday. This is painful.

If refs had overturned that Alabama fans would have every right to be livid

That’s a tipped ball probably but there’s a zero percent chance it gets overturned.
Not against Alabama

Referees tonight might as well be wearing Red & White Alabama stripes. LSU got screwed on 2 huge calls, a fumble overturn & a PI that should have been overturned because the ball was tipped at line of scrimmage. Zebras are doing all they can to get Nick Saban over the finish line

100% tipped. Gotta keep Alabama in the mix for the CFP. Only reason that wasn’t overturned. https://t.co/jmv86APGWc
