Ole Miss officially announced the hiring of running backs coach Kevin Smith on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith joins Ole Miss after spending the 2022 season in the same role for Miami. However, he was with Ole Miss in 2020 and 2021 and previously coached under Lane Kiffin at Florida Atlantic.

“Coach Smith helped lay the foundation for the championship program that we are building here at Ole Miss, and we look forward to welcoming him back to our staff,” Kiffin said in a release. “His credentials as a running back and running backs coach speak for themselves. His return along with the return of Quinshon (Judkins) and our other backs builds some amazing excitement to see what levels can be reached at that position.”

During his most recent season at Ole Miss, Smith helped develop 3 running backs who placed in the top 25 of SEC rushing yardage leaders for 2021. Jerrion Early, Snoop Conner and Henry Parrish helped a Rebels offense that rushed for 2,829 yards that season.

Smith replaces Marquel Blackwell, who left for the same role at Texas A&M earlier this offseason.

As a player, Smith was an All-American at Central Florida. He went on to become a 3rd round pick in the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
