Former Texas A&M star shortshop Braden Shewmake is heading up to the big leagues. The Atlanta Braves called up Shewmake on Friday.

The No. 21 overall pick of the 2019 MLB Draft, Shewmake heads to Atlanta after hitting 4 homers and stealing 7 bases in his past 16 games for Triple-A Gwinnett, posting an .862 OPS. The move comes as the Braves place reserve infielder Ehire Adrianza on the 10-day IL with right elbow inflammation. Shewmake, though, doesn’t appear to be heading to the big league club for a bench role.

Atlanta’s Opening Day starter at shortstop, Orlando Arcia, is recovering from a fractured left wrist. Current starting shortstop Vaughn Grissom has struggled at the plate and in the field recently, presenting an opportunity for Shewmake.

According to MLB.com, Shewmake could get a majority of the starts at shortstop during Arcia’s rehab assignment. Shewmake could come in as a late-inning defensive replacement on days he doesn’t start.

Shewmake played for Texas A&M from 2017-to-2019. In his first season, he was named an All-American and recognized as the SEC’s Freshman of the Year and Collegiate Baseball’s National Freshman of the Year. A 2-time All-SEC selection, Shewmake hit for a .323 career batting average with 45 runs, 40 doubles, 10 triples, 22 home runs and 161 RBIs. He also posted 32 stolen bases, a .487 slugging percentage and a .381 OBP.

The Braves open a 3-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles at 7:20 p.m. ET Friday.
