William Penn Bates spent one year as the head football coach at Auburn University in 1903. His team finished the season with a 4-3 record, and for his career Bates was 8-19 as a head coach. He passed away in 1956 at the age of 76.
A former newspaper reporter who has roamed the southeastern United States for years covering football and eating way too many barbecue ribs, if there is such a thing.
