Spike Nelson spent more than a decade coaching college football in the 1930’s and 40’s, and coached the Mississippi State football program for one season in 1938. Nelson had served as the line coach at LSU from 1932-1937 before taking over at MSU, and in his lone season as head coach he led the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record. He also spent time coaching at Iowa and Yale, and retired with a 5-13 overall record as a head coach. Nelson passed away in 1998 at the age of 92.
