The Tigers, who rank No. 16 in the AP Top 25 poll, still have some chance to make noise in the playoff picture. Their only two losses come to the teams sitting first (Mississippi State) and third (Auburn) in the CFP rankings, and they just beat the team ranked No. 4, Mississippi. LSU is on bye this weekend, but the Tigers take on CFP No. 6 Alabama when they return to action on Nov. 8.

This is the first edition of the rankings in the first year of the playoff system. Previously, the national championship matchup had been decided by the BCS rankings, a formulaic way of deciding the rankings that led to much controversy. This year, a 12-member committee is compiling rankings of the top 25 teams, with the top four teams competing in a playoff that will decide the national championship.

LSU had great success during the BCS era, both under Nick Saban and Les Miles. They were the second SEC team to take home a BCS championship when they topped Oklahoma to cap off the 2003-04 season. Four years later, Miles got his first national championship when LSU upset Ohio State to finish the 2007-08 season. The Tigers lost to Alabama in the 2011-12 BCS Championship game. LSU was 4-1 overall in BCS games. Last year, the Tigers finished No. 16 in the BCS rankings.
