When ESPN’s producers envisioned Tuesday night’s unveiling of the College Football Playoff rankings, how many of them imagined Mississippi State and those cowbells carrying the No. 1 spot?

That’s exactly what happened when the committee revealed their current poll, as the Bulldogs (7-0, 4-0) topped Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss as the four teams currently slotted to make the playoff.

Mississippi State also is ranked No. 1 in the AP and Coaches Poll. Florida State and Marshall, which didn’t make the committee’s Top 25, are the two other undefeated teams.

The Bulldogs have games at No. 6 Alabama and at No. 4 Ole Miss left on the schedule, as well as a potential game against No. 11 Georgia in Atlanta in the SEC championship. Unlike an NCAA Tournament selection show, this is just a preview, a window into how the 12-member committee evaluates these teams.

Still, it’s nice recognition for clanga, And it’s confirmation that if the team continues to win, it will have a chance to play for the national championship, and if it loses one game, it still has a great shot.
