Tennessee head coach Butch Jones predicted his team would make a bowl game in 2014. The second-year head coach accomplished that feat after capturing his sixth win during a 24-17 victory over Vanderbilt in Week 14. During his weekly television program, “The Butch Jones Show,” Jones told Bob Kessling, co-host and voice of the Vols, about the confidence he had in his roster.

“[I had a] great confidence in them,” Jones said. “And they’ve show great resiliency. And they continue to get better and better and better and we knew they had a tough stretch. But if we just focused on the process, we spoke about ‘digging for gold’ every single day. And a lot of times people quit when success is right there. We even had a shovel on the sideline. But again, we had individuals step up and impact the football game and again I’m really proud of everyone.”

Tennessee hasn’t made a bowl game appearance since 2010. The upcoming bowl game appearance marks the first for the Vols’ entire roster. Jones reflected on Saturday’s win and how important it was to the rising program.

“It was a very big night,” Jones said. “I’m very proud of our players. I thought it was a microcosm of the entire season. The resiliency and perseverance that had to be shown in this game all over the board. And our players responded and also thank you to Volnation for really creating a home field advantage for us. Again, just proud of everyone in our football organization. We talk about being all aligned in everything that we do and we’re all aligned.”
