Colin Cowherd blasts Alabama AD for scheduling comments: ‘What’s weaker than Mercer?’
Colin Cowherd took Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne to task for some comments he made in the aftermath of Sunday’s final CFP rankings reveal.
Alabama was the first team left out of the 12-team field, missing out in favor of an 11-2 SMU team who lost the ACC Championship Game on a long field goal at the buzzer. As a result of that decision, Byrne released a statement saying Alabama would evaluate its nonconference scheduling philosophies moving forward.
Cowherd mocked the idea that Alabama needs to “soften” its schedule.
“Athletic director Greg Byrne said he would need to assess the rigorous nonconference schedules going forward for Alabama,” Cowherd said. “You mean the rigorous out-of-conference schedule that includes Mercer, Western Kentucky, South Florida and a bad Wisconsin team this year? What a bunch of nonsense.”
Cowherd also pointed out that Alabama lost 3 SEC games, including 2 to unranked teams.
“I’m willing to give someone a mulligan,” Cowherd added. “Vandy and Oklahoma beat you? So they need to soften their schedule? What’s weaker than Mercer? I mean how many more directional schools can Alabama put on it? You went Western Kentucky, you want to schedule Eastern Kentucky, too?”

Alabama is now preparing to face Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
