O.J. Howard was expected to be the Buffalo Bills backup tight end this season, but instead he was a roster-cut casualty Tuesday.

Howard, however, didn’t stay on the free-agent list for long and signed with the Houston Texans according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Howard was a first-round pick (19th overall) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He had a fairly strong start in Tampa before injuries began to derail his career. In 2018, Howard had 34 catches for 565 yards and five touchdowns through 10 games before a foot injury ended his season early. In 2020, Howard played just four games before his blew out his Achilles.

Howard signed a one-year contract with Bills worth $3 million in March. The contract money was guaranteed for the season even though Buffalo cut Howard.

Before he joined the NFL, Howard was a standout at Alabama and was named Offensive MVP of the 2016 CFP national championship game after recording five catches for 208 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-40 win over Clemson.
