Former Alabama WR Julio Jones is without a doubt one of the top-five wide receivers in today’s NFL, perhaps even the No. 1 guy.
Every year since 2014, he’s had at least 1,400 receiving yards, topping out with 136 catches for 1,871 yards in 2016. Last year, he recorded 113 grabs for 1,677 yards for the Atlanta Falcons.
Still, he has his sights set even higher entering the 2019 campaign. When asked on Wednesday if he had a 2,000-yard goal this year, he said he’d rather go for 3,000 yards (via AJC.com):
“I’m not ever going to lie to you, I’m going crazy this year,” Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after his podium session Wednesday. “I’m going crazy. I’ve been doing everything that I need to do. I’m taking care of my body. Physically and mentally, I’ll be ready to go.”
Crazy, like 2,000 yards crazy, Jones was asked.
“Well, I’m not a prediction-type guy, but I might mess around and go three (thousand), you know what I’m talking about,” Jones said with a straight face.
That would be a crazy season for Jones, as no receiver in NFL history has ever gone over 2,000 yards. Former Detroit Lions star Calvin Johnson came the closest, recording 1,964 yards in 2012. Jones’s 1,871 yards in 2016 ranks No. 2 on the NFL’s all-time list.
Jones has the speed, size, strength and talent to go for 2,000 yards, though, if he stays healthy and the Falcons’ offense plays well. But 3,000 yards? We’ll see.
