Frank Reich, head coach of the Carolina Panthers, officially labeled No. 1 overall pick and former Alabama standout quarterback Bryce Young the starter Wednesday. This comes via a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

This has been an unofficial “duh” for some time now. Young is the future of the Panthers and will be guided by a strong veteran presence in Andy Dalton, who already has experience mentoring talented young QBs as he did in Chicago with Justin Fields.

Young is smaller in stature but makes up for it with an incredible football IQ, deadly accuracy and a capable dual-threat ability. The Panthers made a point to trade with the Bears for the No. 1 overall pick and didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger despite other top options including Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Florida’s Anthony Richardson.

That’s likely to pay off for them, too. Young, who won the Heisman in 2021, finished his Alabama career having thrown for 8,356 yards, 80 touchdowns and 12 interceptions against SEC competition.

All but 156 of those yards and 1 of those touchdowns came in his final 2 seasons following the departure of Mac Jones.
