Nick Saban’s decision to go for 2 in the 3rd quarter of Alabama’s game against Ole Miss Saturday was premeditated, he explained on Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference.

After scoring a touchdown halfway through the 3rd quarter on Saturday, Saban decided to go for 2 and go up 17-7 rather than 16-7. The decision didn’t end up making much of a difference as the Tide’s defense kept Ole Miss out of the endzone for the rest of the game, but Saban explained his decision to go for 2 was thought of before the game.

“Some people think it’s unusual, some people don’t,” Saban said. “We always make a decision before the game starts, at what point in the game would we go for 2. And middle to late in the 3rd quarter and 4th quarter is kind of what our philosophy was going into that game. So that’s exactly what we did.”

Saban and his staff plan out when they will go for 2 in a game, if at all, and on Saturday, the situation was right to tack on 2 extra points.

Alabama cruised to a win against Ole Miss, and the Tide will be looking for similar success this weekend as they take on Mississippi State.
