Alabama returning starter Shyheim Carter underwent surgery Friday, per a report from AL.com’s Matt Zenitz.
The Tide’s starting nickel had sports hernia surgery, but he’s expected back in time for spring ball in March. The rising senior from Kentwood, Louisiana, recorded 42 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, three QB hurries and a forced fumble in 2018 as a leader in the Tide’s secondary.
Carter has played in 36 career games making 11 starts.
A sports hernia differs from the traditional, abdominal hernia. Most athletes are able to return six to 12 weeks after surgery.
The former 4-star prospect was ranked as the nation’s No. 9 overall cornerback and the state of Louisiana’s No. 5 overall prospect in the class of 2016, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. He originally signed with Alabama over Ole Miss.
