Bruce Pearl insists Auburn has ‘arguably’ been top team in SEC across past 6 seasons

Bruce Pearl made a claim some will disagree with Tuesday afternoon.

The Auburn hoops head coach met with reporters as practice tips off for the 2023-24 season, which is set to start in early November. He told everyone in attendance that he believes Auburn has “arguably” been the best team in the SEC across the past 6 seasons.

It’s not a bad argument. The Tigers are one of a pair of SEC programs to win the regular season title twice across the past 6 years. They’ve put several strong players into the NBA such as Walker Kessler, Isaac Okoro and Jabari Smith, to name a few.

Finally, Pearl’s squad cracked the Final Four in 2018-19 and only missed the Big Dance once in the span.

A few programs could argue against Auburn for the title of top recent SEC squad. Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky come to mind, but the one team that really gives Auburn a run is their in-state foe, Alabama.

Nate Oats’ crew have won the SEC regular season title and tournament title twice. The Tide has put players such as Collin Sexton, Brandon Miller and Herb Jones in the NBA.

The Tide has also made a pair of Sweet Sixteen appearances and championed the SEC Player of the Year twice since 2017.

Which team would you give the crown?
