Before Deion Sanders was hired at Colorado, Charles Barkley wanted Auburn to hire him.

The NBA legend who played college basketball at Auburn was gunning for the Tigers to try to get Sanders to Auburn, but ultimately he didn’t have much sway.

“I made it publicly and privately known that I wanted Deion. That’s all I could do,” Barkley said on the Dan Patrick Show. “I really wanted Deion at Auburn, because I think wherever he goes he’s going to be successful. He’s just that great of a coach and a person.”

While Barkley couldn’t get Sanders to Auburn, he’s satisfied with the coach that Auburn did get in Hugh Freeze.

“I’m all in on Coach Freeze, but I really wanted Deion at Auburn,” Barkley said. “We got Coach Freeze now, and I got to support him 100%.”

Sanders has undeniably turned Colorado into a fan-favorite nationwide. While the Buffaloes have lost their last two games, they’ve already made strides from last season. Moving forward, Barkley has faith that Sanders is going to turn Colorado into a top team in the country.

“It’s what I know Deion was going to do. He has the it factor,” Barkley said. “He’s a really great person. I think sometimes we see people’s persona and don’t listen to them. But he’s a great coach, he’s got a great staff.”
