Steckel’s tenure on Mizzou’s coaching staff began in 2001 as the Tigers’ linebackers coach. He was promoted to defensive coordinator by head coach Gary Pinkel in 2009, then given his current title of associate head coach two years later. Predicated on stopping the run and forcing turnovers with heavy blitzing, Steckel’s defense is one of the SEC’s most fierce.
Steckel’s college coaching career began at Miami (Ohio) in 1982 as a graduate assistant after he served four years in the United States Marine Corps. From there, he developed into a well-respected recruiter and held defensive assistant positions at six different programs before starting at Mizzou.
