Florida defender reportedly won’t play in Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma

Florida safety Shawn Davis has missed the last three Gator games. According to a report, it’s about to become four games.

Matt Zenitz of AL.com reported Thursday night that Davis won’t play in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 30 when UF takes on Oklahoma. In his tweet, Zenitz described the decision as an opt-out. Reporters who cover the Gators were quick to point out that Davis has been dealing with an injury the past few weeks.

Despite playing in only seven games, Davis is tied for the team lead in interceptions with 2 picks. (Sophomore cornerback Kaiir Elam, who has played in all 11 games, also has 2 INTs.)

Davis also did not play against Mizzou on Oct. 31, Florida’s first game after the team’s COVID outbreak. He last appeared in the Kentucky game on Nov. 28, missing the following games against Tennessee, LSU and Alabama.

A class of 2017 senior, Davis has also logged 40 total tackles, including 2 for loss, a forced fumble and a pass breakup this season.
