Former Georgia running back Sony Michel’s time with the Los Angeles Chargers has come to an end. The former 1st-round pick was waived on Saturday as Joey Bosa was activated from the injured reserve list, the team announced.
After being taken 31st overall by the New England Patriots in 2018, Michel rushed for 931 yards and 6 touchdowns as a rookie before recording 912 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2019. But he played in just 9 games in 2020 due in part to injury, leading to him being traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. There, he totaled 845 yards and 4 touchdowns as part of the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning season.
After his release, Michel signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins in May, but the team released him just before the start of the season. He returned to L.A., this time with the Chargers, where he was good for just 36 attempts and 106 yards before his release.
The Chargers are 9-6 and have already punched their ticket to the playoffs. They face the Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.
