Georgia baseball could be adding a big bat to its 2024 team.
Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball shared Thursday evening that Sam Houston transfer OF Joe Redfield has committed to the Bulldogs. Redfield shined as a junior in the 2023 season.
The concern with Redfield is whether he will go in the upcoming 2023 MLB Draft. Juniors have more negotiating leverage with the option to return for another season of college.
In 2023, Redfield hit .402, which ranked No. 21 in the country. He tied for No. 7 in the nation with 100 hits, helping Sam Houston to a 39-25 record and an NCAA Tournament berth as Western Athletic Conference Tournament champions. Redfield, who hit 15 home runs and drove in 81 runs, was named first-team All-WAC and third-team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Georgia coach Wes Johnson has some first-hand familiarity with Redfield. Johnson was the pitching coach for 2023 national champion LSU, which faced Sam Houston on Feb. 26 in Round Rock. Redfield went 1-for-2 with 2 walks in the game. Sam Houston was also part of the Baton Rouge regional but did not face LSU.
TRANSFER NEWS: @BaseballUGA has landed Sam Houston outfielder and Third Team @D1Baseball
All-American outfielder Joe Redfield, he announced. Redfield is a very big #MLBDraft risk, but did hit .402 with 15 HRs and 56 RBIs in 2023. Sweet lefthanded stroke. https://t.co/eTepH8FGTd— Kendall Rogers (@KendallRogers) July 7, 2023
