Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs face off against Auburn and Hugh Freeze Saturday, looking to improve to 5-0 on the season.
At the SEC’s weekly teleconference Wednesday morning, Smart spoke in detail about Freeze and how he likes to run his offense. The Tigers have not had the greatest start to the year offensively, but Smart knows Freeze is just getting started with the Tigers and this recent trend is unlikely to stay for long.
Smart particularly noted that Freeze doesn’t like to “trick you or do anything super fancy.” Freeze instead commands execution at a high level and always has answers for what a team chooses to do defensively.
Here’s his full breakdown of Freeze’s offense from Wednesday:
“Hugh does an incredible job wherever he’s been offensively, and you can tell, he’s not trying to trick you or do anything super fancy, he does a really good job of executing at a high level. They have answers for what you do. If you’re not here, they’re going to throw it there. If your safety’s down, they’re going to throw it there. They’re throwing it there in their RPO game and a guy’s open, they’re going to take what you give them. The biggest difference to me is the commitment to the run. They are physical, they have really good backs, they’re committed to the run in terms of running the ball with physicality, not that he was not that way.”
What Freeze can do and what he’s done so far are 2 different stories, but what would you expect from someone just 4 games into their Auburn career? The Tigers currently rank 2nd to last in the SEC in total yards per game and, by a wide margin, sit last place in passing yards per game.
It’s not exactly the offense you want if knocking off the 2-time defending champs is to be achieved. But we play the game for a reason.
