Paul Finebaum says Georgia is in a hangover year: ‘There’s a talent drop off’

Paul Finebaum shared his thoughts on No. 1 Georgia surviving a scare against host Auburn to remain undefeated with a 27-20 victory.
Auburn tied the game at 20 with 6:21 to go on a 42-yard field goal from Alex McPherson. Georgia (5-0) iced the victory with a 40-yard touchdown from Carson Beck to Brock Bowers with 2:52 remaining.
During an appearance on McElroy And Cubelic In The Morning, the ESPN analyst doesn’t believe the Bulldogs are as potent as their recent national championship versions.

“There’s a talent drop off. I think there’s a couple of key injuries,” Finebaum said. “But that game Saturday should not have come down to 1 drive where if Carson Beck made a costly error they could actually lose the game.”
Finebaum thinks the close win against Auburn is foreshadowing of how Georgia might have to win some other games the rest of the season.
“That just should not be in the cards,” Finebaum said. “…Georgia has too much talent. But they don’t have the talent as fully blossomed or bloomed as in the past. That’s going to be really a serious challenge for Kirby Smart.”
Finebaum adds that if Georgia ended up playing against Oklahoma to start the season like originally planned, it could have exposed the Bulldogs.
“They may have shown everybody how average they are,” Finebaum said.
Georgia will aim for a 6-0 record when they host No. 20 Kentucky on Oct. 7 (7 p.m. EST/ESPN).
