John Calipari’s 2023-24 Kentucky team won’t include Sahvir Wheeler. In a Monday tweet, Calipari confirmed reports that Wheeler intends to leave UK after 2 seasons with the Wildcats.
Wheeler had recently revealed his plans to the Kentucky coach, Calipari said in Monday’s tweet. Calipari said he supports Wheeler’s decision to seek a fresh start as a graduate transfer.
I talked with Sahvir a few days ago and he decided that he wants to graduate and play one more year because of the injuries he faced this year. He also wanted a fresh start, and I supported his decision. Sahvir has been a big part of our team and we wish him nothing but the best.

Wheeler wanting a fresh start for his final season is understandable. An All-SEC selection and Bob Cousy Award finalist in 2021-22, Wheeler missed time due to injuries in the 2022-23 campaign and saw freshman Cason Wallace take on a larger role as the season progressed.
In 2022-23, Wheeler made 21 appearances, last playing on Feb. 4 against Florida. He averaged 7.7 points, 5.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds over 28.5 minutes per game.
A Houston native, Wheeler began his college basketball career at Georgia.
