Jon Sumrall is being targeted by Tulane for its head coaching vacancy, according to a report.

That news was first shared by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz on Friday morning. Sumrall, who played linebacker at Kentucky from 2002-04, has spent the past 2 years as Troy’s head coach. He led the Trojans to a 23-4 record and back-to-back Sun Belt Championships during his time with the program.

Sumrall would take over for Willie Fritz, who left Tulane this offseason to take the head job at Houston. Tulane is a healthy program — it is coming off of back-to-back 11-win seasons, including a Cotton Bowl victory over USC to cap the 2022 campaign.

Prior to joining Troy, Sumrall was an assistant coach at multiple SEC programs. He coached at Kentucky from 2019-2021 and rose as high as co-defensive coordinator before he left Lexington. Sumrall was also Ole Miss’ linebackers coach in 2018.

Sumrall’s coaching experience also includes a previous stint at Tulane. He was the program’s co-defensive coordinator from 2012-14.

Sumrall began his coaching career in 2005 as a graduate assistant at Kentucky.
