SEC Network host Paul Finebaum and Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh famously have a bit of a beef, with Harbaugh one time referring to Finebaum as “Pete Finebaum.”

Therefore, it was a bit of a surprise that Finebaum found himself defending Harbaugh during a radio appearance on Monday after the Michigan coach created a controversy at Big Ten Media Days last week.

During an appearance on “The Opening Kickoff” on 105.5 WNSP on Monday, Finebaum said he agrees with Harbaugh’s comments about former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer creating controversy everywhere he goes (quotes via AL.com):

“Jim Harbaugh told the truth,” Finebaum said. “He told the truth. Everywhere Urban Meyer goes, controversy follows. That’s interesting that someone tells the truth. A year ago, we were talking about Urban Meyer lying to the media.”

Finebaum added that perhaps Harbaugh shouldn’t have said anything, but added that it was a good distraction tactic, keeping the talk off his own team:

“If you are Jim Harbaugh’s PR people, you might wonder if it was really the best thing to do, considering that Meyer has owned you,” Finebaum said. “Jim Harbaugh is one of the quirkiest people in any sport. He found a way to take hold of ownership of media days without saying very much about his own team.

“It sounded amusing.”

Harbaugh’s comments are sure to be replayed toward the end of the regular season, as the Wolverines prepare to meet the Buckeyes once again.
