Making Hail State proud: Benardrick McKinney lands huge extension from Texans
The Houston Texans have locked up one of their centerpieces for foreseeable future as Benardrick McKinney is about to get paid.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McKinney’s deal is worth $50 million for five seasons, with $21 million guaranteed.
The former Mississippi State standout defender has racked up 282 total tackles (176 solo), nine sacks, 25 tackles-for-loss, 21 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and three passes defensed in 46 regular season games in his three NFL seasons. Taken with the 43rd overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, McKenney was a key member of the Hail State defense that helped the Bulldogs achieve the No. 1 ranking in the country in 2014.
“Bernardrick plays a key role in our defense and has been highly productive, but more importantly he is a core player who has developed into a team leader within our program,” said Texans General Manager Brian Gaine in a prepared statement. “We are excited to have him a part of our long term future here at the Texans.”
The Texans also announced the signing of first-round pick Martinas Rankin on Thursday. Of course, he too played his college football in Starkville.
