Drew Lock will begin the NFL season on the bench.

The former Missouri standout quarterback and second-round pick (42nd overall) of the Denver Broncos was in a quarterback competition with veteran Geno Smith to determine the starter for the Seattle Seahawks.

Lock, who missed some camp time and the second preseason game with COVID-19 symptoms, got the majority of the work in the final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. He threw for 171 yards and a touchdown, but also had 3 interceptions.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed the obvious in his post-game press conference.

“Geno’s going to start the opener,” Carroll said. “He’s earned it. Drew just ran out of time in making his bid for it.”

Lock was first-team All-SEC in 2017 and second-team All-SEC in 2018. He led FBS football in touchdown passes in 2017 with 44.

His NFL career has been less defined. He has 4,740 yards with 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in 24 appearances (21 starts). Lock was part of a blockbuster trade that sent Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson to the Broncos.
