Report: New Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz volunteers to pay cut

Eli Drinkwitz hasn’t been in Columbia, Missouri, long enough to make too many friends, but his latest gesture will win friends and influence people.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Dave Matter citing a source, Missouri’s first-year head coach has volunteered to take a pay cut to help the university cope with coronavirus-related expenses. Drinkwitz’s salary is $4 million per year.

Drinkwitz, along with 19 other UM coaches and athletic department staff, was emailed by leadership asking him to participate in a volunteered 10 percent reduction, per Matter’s report. Missouri’s head football coach obliged.

Several other universities around the country have announced that coaches and staff would receive salary reductions to help cope with expenses and budget cuts due to the coronavirus pandemic. Missouri is just the latest, but it appears to be the first SEC school to do so.

Missouri President Mun Choi announced this week that he would be taking a 10 percent salary cut. His annual salary is $530,000.
