Going into the season, Auburn named sophomore Kerryon Johnson and redshirt sophomore Kamryn Pettway co-starters at running back.
However, with Pettway out with a leg injury, Johnson has taken command of the position.
In a big 58-7 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday, Johnson carried the ball 24 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
Last week, against LSU, he ran for 93 yards on 22 touches.
Johnson told The Ledger-Enquirer he’s played with a chip on his shoulder because he wants to be successful:
“I got tired of losing close games,” Johnson said. “I got tired of losing games in general. Shoot. I have lost more games my first two years here than high school alone. I just got tired of losing. I had to do my part to influence the win for us.”
No, a win against Louisiana-Monroe isn’t the same as a win over LSU, but Johnson knows he needs to sustain his solid play moving forward:
“It was great, but we know the main goal is we have to win SEC games,” Johnson said. “We have what five straight or something coming up. If I can put those kind of performances in those games and get us to Atlanta that’s the goal.”
Johnson and the Tigers travel to Starkville next weekend to take on Mississippi State. Following a bye on Oct. 15, Auburn’s schedule gets more difficult, with games against Arkansas and Ole Miss.
