Pete Lambo made a confident statement to reporters this week ahead of the Gamecocks’ away battle against Tennessee.
“They say nothing is certain in life except death and taxes, I’ll add another layer to that. That’s Tennessee having a great punt returner.”

Lambo, who handles special teams for South Carolina, is referencing Dee Williams this time around, but he’s also referring to the Vols’ recent history in churning out strong punt returners. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, Vols fans.
In just recent memory alone there was Cordarrelle Patterson, Cam Sutton and, though he was mostly a kick returner, Evan Berry. And that’s without mentioning Alvin Kamara and Velus Jones.
Tennessee’s history is littered with strong punt returners as well. Bobby Majors, Terry Fair and Dale Carter all did damage for Tennessee back in the day, especially Fair who had 53 returns for 745 yards and 2 touchdowns across his career.
Let’s get back to Williams, who is currently 2nd in the SEC with an average of 21 yards per return. The Vols defensive back is almost exclusively a special teams threat, but he’s shown time and time again how valuable he is to the team in that regard. Williams has yet to house one this year, but you better believe it’s coming eventually.
He’s just too talented not to.
