Former Mizzou CB E.J. Gaines was supposed to be a starter for the then-St. Louis Rams in 2015 before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Now in Los Angeles, the Rams will rely on Gaines to shut down Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones, the current NFL leader in receiving yards.

Gaines will be the Rams’ No. 1 corner on Sunday as normal No. 1 CB Trumaine Johnson misses the game with an injury.

Gaines told the Los Angeles Daily News that he feels like he’s ready to make an impact after missing last season:

“I feel like, every game, I’m getting it a little more back and getting back into the swing of things,” Gaines said. “After you sit out a whole year, it takes a while, but I’m just trying to make as many plays as I can for this defense.”

Gaines was a sixth-round pick of the Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has two career interceptions and 18 passes defensed.

The Rams visit the Lions on Sunday afternoon. The game can be seen at 1 p.m. Eastern time on FOX.
