Joe Burrow is tough. Nobody can argue against that.

Plenty of people can argue, and have, that Burrow should not have played Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams while still not 100% with a calf injury. Burrow and the Bengals have sputtered out of the gate this season as he played through the injury in Weeks 1 and 2.

Burrow’s gamble paid off this time, though. The Bengals squeaked out their first win of the season Monday night, downing the Rams, 19-16.

In true competitive fashion, Burrow defended his decision to play following the game, via ESPN:

“There is risk to go out there and potentially re-injure it, but there’s also a risk to go out there and be 0-3,” Burrow said, “so I wanted to be out there for my guys, and I was confident I was going to be able to do what I needed to do to get the win.”

Now, it’s important to note that Burrow still struggled mightily Monday. The former LSU QB threw for 259 yards on 49 passing attempts (26 completions, 53%) with 1 interception. He’s thrown the same number of interceptions as touchdowns this season.

In other words, the Bengals need Burrow healthy in a considerable way.
