If there’s one constant for the Auburn running backs this season, it’s that they’ve all battled injuries.

Kamryn Pettway has suffered from a heel injury, while Kerryon Johnson has battled a hamstring problem. Both played in Auburn’s 49-10 victory against Mississippi State, but Auburn coach Gus Malzahn explained on Tuesday that they both should play along with Kam Martin. The coach said he must be smart with how he uses them, including in practice.

“It’s just a matter of how healthy we can get them before the game,” Malzahn said.

Pettway has missed two games, but totaled 208 yards on 61 carries for three touchdowns. Pettway is a “competitor,” Malzahn told reporters, according to 247 Sports, “we got to get him healthy. If we get him healthy, I think he will be in a good spot.”

Pettway sat out the season opener because of a suspension. He had a career-worst performance on Saturday: five carries for six yards and one loss fumble in the 49-10 win against Mississippi State.

Johnson returned from a hamstring injury suffered early in the season opener, but has returned added a 59-yard run against the Bulldogs and has scored eight touchdowns in the first two SEC games.

No. 12 Auburn hosts Ole Miss at 11 a.m. local time on Saturday on the SEC Network.
