Where each SEC team stands in the all-time UPI/Coaches Poll

Back in 1950, the UPI (United Press International) Poll was created to rival the AP Poll in the college football world. After USA TODAY took it over in 1991, it became known as the Coaches Poll, which is what it’s still called today.

With 77 years of rankings under its belt, it’s interesting to look back at which programs have been historically dominant, as Oklahoma and Ohio State have fared the best in the poll throughout its history.

To put together an all-time list of all the teams to appear in the poll, the folks at College Football News gathered each year’s final poll and awarding the No. 1 team 25 points, the No. 2 team 24 points and so on, with the No. 25 team each year earning a single point.

So, how did the SEC fare? An impressive nine of the 14 squads made the top 25 list:

  • No. 3 — Alabama (895 points)
  • No. 11 — Tennessee (551)
  • No. 13 — LSU (499)
  • No. 14 — Georgia (487)
  • No. 15 — Auburn (480)
  • No. 17 — Florida (464)
  • No. 18 — Arkansas (428)
  • No. 22 — Ole Miss (319)
  • No. 25 — Texas A&M (283)

Of the five teams not in the top 25, Mizzou led the way, checking in at No. 35:

  • No. 35 — Mizzou (228)
  • No. 55 — South Carolina (105)
  • No. 64 — Mississippi State (77)
  • No. 66 — Kentucky (67)
  • No. 96 — Vanderbilt (9)

It’ll be interesting to see how these rankings update at the end of the 2017 season, as there could be some movement depending on how the year plays out.
