Paul Finebaum understands what an upset loss can do to a national championship contender’s title hopes. We may have seen that on Saturday when Oregon went to Columbus and knocked off Ohio State.

During his weekly appearance on the Sunday morning “SportsCenter” on ESPN, Finebaum shared his perspective on the magnitude of the loss.

“It’s hard to explain what happened yesterday at The Horseshoe,” Finebaum said. “Especially when you consider that Oregon, coming into the game, without its two best players and maybe the best player in college football (in defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux).”

Perhaps most alarming is that Oregon had its way with the Buckeyes defense in front of a hostile crowd, and conversely, Ohio State struggled on offense.

“And (Oregon) just did everything right. Mario Cristobal is an ascending coach.…The key to the game was really Joe Moorhead, who was at Mississippi State a couple years ago,” said Finebaum. “Ohio State’s defense couldn’t stop anything. Their offense couldn’t get anything going, and in the end their path to the Playoff is very complicated. That’s a home loss, where Clemson lost a neutral site game, and only really gave up 3 points because one of the scores was on a pick-6.”
