Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze was involved in the penalties announced by the NCAA on Friday morning involving several recruiting violations at the university.

Though Freeze resigned from his position before the 2017 season due to an entirely different scandal, he was still issued a one-year show-cause penalty should he land a head coaching position in 2018. If he does, he’d also have to sit out the first two conference games.

However, the penalties do not affect his ability to take an assistant position, as he made clear in a statement he released on Friday afternoon:

With the news that he can be an assistant without penalty, he could become a hot name for some big-time programs before the 2018 season kicks off.

Where will he end up next? For his sake, he should look outside of the SEC West so he doesn’t have to return to Oxford too often, as he still doesn’t have the best reputation there.
