Top Ole Miss QB target for 2017 goes another direction

Ole Miss had its sights set on Tristan Gebbia, but the four-star QB had different plans.

Gebbia announced his commitment to Nebraska on Monday night.

The Calabasas, Calif. native rates as the nation’s No. 8 pro-style QB in the 247Sports composite rankings for the 2017 recruiting class.

Gebbia visited Ole Miss over the weekend before committing to Mike Riley’s staff on Monday.

247Sports reports that Gebbia visited Nebraska twice in the month of March.

Gebbia explained to 247Sports that he felt the Cornhuskers offered him the best fit for his personal goals:

“I just really felt like Nebraska was the best fit for me to grow as a quarterback and as a man,” he said. “I really just enjoyed the whole process. Nebraska’s coaches really had NU separate itself from the other places with how they run their practices and in other situations. It really makes the team seem like a family. I love that.”

While Ole Miss does have five-star QB Shea Patterson ready to begin his tenure with the Rebels in 2016, Gebbia indicated that potential competition was not something that scared him away from Oxford.

“The bottom line was it was apparent I’d be going to a D-I college,” he said. “They recruit year in and year out to find the next best guy. So anywhere I was going to go there’d be other quarterbacks with a lot of talent and a lot to offer. It’s my job to work my tail off and try to do anything I can until I win the spot.”

Ole Miss is almost certain to add a quarterback in 2017, as the program has just two healthy scholarship quarterbacks on campus and participating in spring practice at the moment.
